Seattle Reign FC fell 2-1 to the Washington Spirit in a National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) match at Audi Field.
What happened?
The match started with a fast pace, and in the 5th minute, Maddie Dahlien was fouled, resulting in an early yellow card for Élisabeth Tsé. The ensuing free kick was taken by captain Sofia Huerta, but the Reign were unable to direct it on target.
Key moments
In the 12th minute, Holly Ward collided with Trinity Rodman, resulting in a yellow card and a free kick for the Spirit. Leicy Santos stepped up to take the kick and directed it toward the back post, where it went untouched and found the back of the net.
Turning point
The Reign continued to defend, but in the 44th minute, Maddie Mercado led a strong press, forcing the Spirit to play the ball back toward their own goal. The pressure forced an errant touch from Lucia Di Guglielmo, which bypassed Sandy MacIver in the net to level the score.
Second half
Returning from the locker room, Head Coach Laura Harvey opted to make two halftime subs, bringing on Sam Meza and Nerilia Mondesir. Seattle started the half on the front foot and managed to dictate the tempo for the majority of the final 45 minutes.

In the 81st minute, Washington retook the lead as Rodman found Hal Hershfelt in the middle of the field. She opted to carry the ball toward goal herself and release a shot from outside the box, which took a deflection into the back of the net.
